The Bread of Life - Part 2

Continuing Pastor Herk's message, he states that we eat and drink to our full as a direct result of our physical hunger and thirst. But sometimes, when it comes to our spiritual we are empty, with hunger and thirst. The only thing that can fill and satisfy an empty soul and spirit is the Bread of Life – Jesus Christ. Isaiah 55:1-2a says, “You there! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Physical bread sustains us for a period of time, but then we become hungry again. The Bread of Life that comes down from Heaven gives us everything that we need in spiritual nutrition and eternal life.

Jesus said in John 6:49-51, “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I will give for the life of the world also is My flesh.”

In John 10:28-30, Jesus tells us, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” Jesus is sufficient to save us now and into eternity. The end never really comes, we pass on and pass through from this side on earth to the other side in Heaven for the Believer.

Metaphorically speaking, Jesus tells us in John 6:53-57, So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. To eat His Flesh and to drink His blood is to believe in Jesus. Take Jesus into your soul and spirit for spiritual nourishment, just as you take food and drink into your body for physical nourishment. It is with that same understanding that we can come to the Lord’s table and participate in holy Communion. Abide in Christ. Jesus says in John 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life.”

John 6:68-69 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You [alone] have the words of eternal life [you are our only hope]. We have believed and confidently trusted, and [even more] we have come to know [by personal observation and experience] that You are the Holy One of God [the Christ, the Son of the living God].”

If you want peace and assurance in your soul, no matter what tomorrow might bring, hold onto Jesus. Jesus Christ is the Bread of life, lifegiving bread from Heaven that sustains everyone who believes and partake of it. God’s heavenly Manna is eternally good, once and for all. And when we believe, confess and repent, we are saved, but need to daily strengthen our faith upon His almighty provision, meeting with Him, commune with Him in praise and prayer. The Lord has given us everything that we need. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’” Live on the Bread of Life.

In Christ, Brian
