Sovereign Lord

2 Samuel 7:22  “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.”

“Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God” The Hebrew word for Lord [with a capital “L”] is “ăḏōnāy”, meaning Lord – the title, spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence; the Lord (used as a proper name of God only): the Creator and Ruler of the Cosmos and life in sovereign reign. In Holy Scripture, it means the Supreme Being; Jehovah. When LORD, in the Old Testament, is prints in capitals, it is the translation of Jehovah, and so might, with more propriety, be rendered. The Lord Jehovah is sovereign and has sovereignty over all.

1 Chronicles 29:11-12 “O Lord, you are great, mighty, majestic, magnificent, glorious, and sovereign over all the sky and earth! You, Lord, have dominion and exalt yourself as the ruler of all. You are the source of wealth and honor; you rule over all. You possess strength and might to magnify and give strength to all.”

The 1828 Webster’s dictionary defines the word “sovereign” as 1. Supreme in power; possessing supreme dominion; as the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. 2. Supreme; superior to all others; chief. God is the sovereign good of all who love and obey Him. The kingdom of Heaven has a King, who has dominion to reign and establishes rules of the king’s domain. Bible.org states that Almighty God Himself told us in many places in the Bible that He created everything. God is sovereign—the king—over the universe, over the earth, over all the creatures on the earth, and over every human being. He rules it with supreme authority and power. We need to think of Him as our sovereign king and be willing to respect Him and obey Him. We can trust His care for His creation, including us.

Deuteronomy 10:14 “The heavens—indeed the highest heavens—belong to the Lord your God, as does the earth and everything in it.”

Though in rebellion, fallen mankind may reject God’s sovereignty and divine reign and rule, they are not in ultimate control. People may think that they are on the throne of their life, but everyone needs to get off their throne and willfully allow the true Lord God to take His rightful place on that throne. He alone is the sovereign Lord, our King.

In God We Trust.

In Christ, Brian

Happy Mother's Day!
