The Very Next Verse

Matthew 7:1-6 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.

In Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount”, we find one of the most quote bible verses “Judge not, that

you be not judged.” Sin is never popular with sinners and they desire their willful transgressions to not be judged or people to pronounce an opinion concerning right and wrong based upon the Word of God. But is the Lord really saying, “judge not” or do not determine right from wrong at all? The Greek word for “judge” is “krinō”, and is in the active and continuous sense, meaning “do not have a judgmental attitude and continually judging people. Of course we are to determine right from wrong and call wrong things wrong. After speaking to taking care of your owe issues, in the very next sentence He tells us to “not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine”. How are you to judge who are the dogs and swine? Judge righteously.

John 8:10-12 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

A young lady that I knew told me that she loved that Jesus said to the woman caught in the act of adultery, “Neither do I condemn you.” I told her that it was one of my favorite Bible stories too, because in the very same sentence Jesus tell her, “go and sin no more” [which she purposely omitted to take the point out of context]. And the very next sentence tells us that Jesus is the light of the world, so His followers walk in the light of life! It’s about doing what is “right in the eyes of the Lord”.

1 John 4:7-10 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

A lady in the Senior Care facility stated that she believed that everyone has good in them and is going to Heaven because God is love, so love is God. God is not a feeling, nor a divine attribute, but love is an essential attribute of God. Loving one another is not an excuse to excuse sin, wrong is always wrong and the wages of unrepented sin is always death. The very next sentence tells us that “God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” Love cost Jesus His life!

2 Peter 3:7-9 says, “the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” The very next sentence declares that, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. God is not in the turning a blind eye to rebellious sin business, but in lovingly restoring us back to an upright position before Him before it’s too late. Salvation is the goal.

In Christ, Brian
