Mandate Thursday

Flowers in the snow~ | Frühling blumen, Frühlingsblumen, Schöne blumen

John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Today is Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday (also known as Great and Holy Thursday, Covenant Thursday, among other names) is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy is the name of the Christian rite of foot washing, which traditionally occurs during Maundy Thursday church services) and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels.

It is the fifth day of Holy Week, preceded by Holy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word “mandatum”, for commandment, reflecting Jesus' words "I give you a new commandment." The 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language, the word “commandment” is defined as: A command; a mandate; an order or injunction given by authority; charge; precept. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. John 13.

The English word “maundy” in the name for the day is derived through Middle English and Old French mandé, from the Latin mandatum (also the origin of the English word "mandate"), the first word of the phrase "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" ("A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.") There is nothing mundane about Maundy Thursday; it is Mandate Thursday; the new commandment to love one another as the Lord loved us.

Ephesians 5:1-2 “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

In Christ, Brian
