God's Masterpiece - Part 1

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Last Sunday, Pastor Herk continued in his sermon series on “Spirit and Truth Worship”. The messages each week have been trying to covey what a holy and awesome God we serve. Those born-again Christians have been recreated as new creations by God in Christ as His masterpieces. Every redeemed child of God is a masterpiece. Throughout history there have been many gifted Artists creating many different signature masterpiece works of art that they are most known for. What is God’s signature masterpiece? We can think of the starry heavens of the cosmos created by God that blanket the sky at night. Psalm 19:1 proclaims “The heavens tell of the glory of God; And their expanse declares the work of His hands.” We can think of the beautiful landscapes, lust vegetation, diversity of life, magnificent waterfalls, lakes and oceans, and natural rock structures found on His created Earth. Romans 1:20 declares, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” They are certainly masterpieces.

Psalm 139:14 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Our mind, body, and soul are intricately designed and constructed with irreducible complexity; approximately 75,000,000,000,000 of living single cells, with 50 billion atoms making up each individual cell. Every 5 minutes, 50,000 of our cells die and are replaced as the body is self-replicating, self-repairing and self-functioning by the providence of Creator and Sustainer God. Not to mention the intricate functions of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin in conjunction with the faculties of the brain for the senses, the relative operations of the organs, the nervous system and the circulatory system to make up the human body and operate optimally to perform basic to sophisticated tasks. We are His workmanship. You are God’s masterpiece and reveal the glory of God.

Isaiah 44:24 states, Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb:“I am the Lord, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself.”

The word “workmanship” is the Greek word “poiēma”, a work of God as Creator, and where we get the word “poem” from, indicating a masterful work of art; a masterpiece created in Christ Jesus, done by God. Genesis 1:31 explains about Creation that “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So,the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” There are several characteristics in any masterpiece that are evident, yet conceptualized, designed and created entirely by the Artist themself. John 1:3 tells us, “All thingswere made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” Made not to just exist, but for a purpose.

Let's continue Pastor Herk's message on "God's Masterpiece" in the next post.

In Christ, Brian
