John 8:12 Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

The word “Light” is the Greek word “Phōs”, meaning a heavenly light that make manifest, because God ('ĕlōhîm – Father, Son and Holy Spirit)  is light because divine light has the extremely delicate, subtle, pure, with a brilliant quality of truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity associated with it. This godly light is truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity congruous with it, especially the saving truth embodied in Christ and by his love and effort imparted to mankind.

John 1:1-4 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

The light of Christ is that which is exposed to the view of all, openly, publicly with reason of mind and the power of understanding esp. moral and spiritual truth that is consummate and free from every imperfection, to which the true disciples of Christ will be exalted, equivalent to the kingdom of light. Jesus declares in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Physical darkness is the absence of light. Spiritual darkness is the absence of God. The Lord explains in John 3:19-20, “this is the condemnation, that the light [Christ] has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

The 1828 Webster’s dictionary defines “light” as: Light of understanding and wisdom. Illumination of mind; perceived instruction; knowledge; understanding. One part of Scripture throws light on another. In Scripture, light is God, the source of knowledge, and Christ, that was the true light, that lighteth every man. The gospel light that brings saving knowledge. The gifts and graces of Christians unto true prosperity and happiness. The Apostle John proclaims in 1 John 1:7 “if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” This is the light of Salvation by the Savior of the world.

Ephesians 5:8-11 explains, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” Expel the darkness in the world by shining the light of Christ and His Gospel of forgiveness and salvation unto eternal life. In Colossians 1:9-12 the Apostle Paul prays: We ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Have a Happy New Year, in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2024 AD.

In Christ, Brian
