Creator of Life

John 1:1-2 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” Time, Space and Matter are “from” the beginning, but the Word was “in” the beginning.

God in this passage of Scripture is the Greek word “Theos”, meaning the Godhead, the trinity - God the Father, the first person in the trinity / Christ, the second person of the trinity / Holy Spirit, the third person in the trinity. God is defined in the 1828 Webster’s dictionary as: The Supreme Being; Jehovah; the eternal and infinite Spirit, the Creator, and the Sovereign of the universe. God is a spirit; and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24. We get “theology” (the study of God) & “enthusiasm” (Greek ἐνθουσιασμός from ἐν (en, “in”) and θεός (theós, “god”) and οὐσία (ousía, “essence”) meaning intense & eager enjoyment, religious fervor resulting directly by divine inspiration, possessed by God, in God’s essence.

John 1:3 “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made..”

British Bible Commentator Matthew Henry states that this passage speaks to His agency in making the world. This is here, expressly asserted: (1.) All things were made by him. Jesus was with God to be active in the divine operations in the beginning of time (Genesis 1:26). God made the world by a word (Ps. 33:6) and Christ was the Word. By Him, not as a subordinate instrument, but as a co-ordinate agent, God made the world and universe (Hebrews 1:2), not as the workman cuts by his axe, but as the body sees by the eye. (2.) The contrary is denied: Without Him was not anything made that was made, from the highest angel to the meanest worm. God the Father did nothing without Him in that work. Now, this proves that He is God; for He that built all things is God. This proves the excellency of the Christian religion, that the author and founder of Christianity is the same that was the author and founder of the world. He is the fountain of all excellency! When we worship Christ, we worship Him to whom the patriarchs gave honor as the Creator of the world, and on whom all creatures depend. (3.) This shows how well qualified He was for the work of our redemption and salvation. Help was laid upon one that was mighty indeed; for it was laid upon Him that made all things; and He is appointed the author of our bliss who was the author of our being.

John 1:4 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

Henry asserts that this verse proclaims the origin of life and light is in Christ. This further proves that Jesus is God, and every way qualified for His earthly visitation undertaking; for, (1) He has life in himself; not only the “true” God, but the “living” God. God is life (2) All living creatures have their life in Him; not only all the matter of the creation was made by Him, but all the life too that is in the creation is derived from Him and supported by Him. It was the Word of God that produced the moving creatures that had life, in Genesis 1:20, when God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” Jesus is the Truth and illuminates the truth of life.

in christ, Brian
