Psalm 115:1 “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your mercy, because of Your truth.”
One
of the great words of the Bible is the word “glory,” and it should be evident
that glory belongs to God, not man. The trusty 1828 Webster’s Dictionary
defines the word “glory” as Praise ascribed in adoration; honor. To exult with
joy; to rejoice. Indeed, the very “heavens
declare the glory of God” – Psalm 19:1. One commentary that I
read points out how Scripture states that not only do the heavens declare His
glory, but “the glory of the Lord shall
endure forever” (104:31). It is thus singularly
inappropriate for God’s children on Earth to seek glory for themselves.
Jeremiah
9:23-24 Thus says the Lord:
“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory
in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him
who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord,
exercising loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in
these I delight,” says the Lord.
This
Old Testament exhortation is echoed in the New. “
Corinthians
1:27-31 “But God has chosen
the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen
the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and
the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen,
and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that
no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus,
who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption — that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him
glory in the Lord.”
God
manifests His glory to us today in both mercy and truth, mercifully saving us
in Christ, who is Himself God’s truth. Thus, in Christ mercy and truth are met
together, and we shall praise thy name for thy loving kindness [same word as
‘mercy’] and for thy truth”. In
the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the Sea, with a glory in
His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy, let
us die to make men free, while God is marching on. Glory, glory!
Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! While
God is marching on.
Glory
to God in the highest,
in
Christ, Brian
