Counter-Culture Change

Romans 12:2 "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

I remember when the “counter-culture” started, for myself in the 1960’s and for my kids in the 1980’s. Some wanted “change” from the established norm / status quo and it became a trendy fad to be different. With some, the latest craze was just changing to be changing to the newest fashionable popular thing coming down the turnpike … doing what everyone was doing now and leaving the faded fads behind. They come and they go. What’s new?

Some were trend-setters, looking to be the innovative imagination behind starting new trends for others to follow. Leaders for the following masses, who start then leave immediately to start another. I remember taking an eye-opening class on how marketing and the world market depends on these trend changes and creating a culture of boredom, thirsty for change, never contented.

With some, the fun is in the “shock power” of how upsetting what they do is to the established way. Passionately, getting an angry “rise” of negative emotion is the depraved, malicious goal of these individuals enthusiastically trying so hard to differentiate themselves from the rest, where radical self-expression has the goal to disturb the peace. It truly is a boundary-crossing game of shameless disrespect, hate and evil. Nothing innocent about it.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Jesus Christ was radically counter-culture in His time on earth, because the people of that day had interpreted the Word of God wrongly and living not as God intended, so when the Lord gave and lived out the proper meaning it was a new way … the way that was pleasing in the eyes of Creator Father God. He didn’t change; He changed others from wrong to right … right with God. Somethings never change. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. We can rest there in contentment.

Think about it today. To read, study, know and live by the Word of God is counter-culture again in a world that has lost its moral compass and boundaries. It’s our turn to enthusiastically change the world, as children of God, for the better. We have the great commission and there is ministry everywhere. Walking in the Spirit, speak the truth in love and make the change to true life. Be the difference in the world that you want to see.

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

In Christ, Brian
