Absolute God

Psalm 24:10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.

America’s Founding Father Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life are death and taxes. But now we cannot be certain of those either, because a new cliché or maxim has appeared stating that there are no absolutes in life. What exactly are absolutes? I read that Webster’s Dictionary explains that the word “absolute” comes from two Latin words “ab” (meaning – “from”) and “solvere” (meaning “to set free”) from which we get the word dissolve. So, absolute means “to be set free”. Literally, free, independent of and unlimited by anything extraneous – complete in itself - unconditionally existing independent of any other cause.

Proverbs 14:11-12 The house of the wicked will be overthrown, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

But set free from what? One article says that to be absolute means to be set free from imperfection or error; to be pure. It means to free from any admixtures. It is perfect. It means to be free from any limit, restriction, or qualification, as an absolute monarch. And it means to be positive, certain and authoritative. That is what absolutes are, whether we are talking about persons or truth. Sadly, many today have been lied to and falsely taught to believe the myth that truth and morality are relative, and that there are no absolutes. Did you hear about the school teacher that said to their class, “There are no absolutes in life and you can know nothing for certain.” One student responded, Teacher, are you sure about that?” The teacher replied, “Absolutely, I’m certain of it.” It becomes very difficult to live in a completely relativistic world. No laws, no standards, no statutes, no plans, no direction, no commands, no decrees, no rules equals no order, just aimless chaos.

Psalm 19:7-9 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are  true and righteous altogether.”

If there are no absolutes, there is no God, because God is the ultimate absolute. His omnipotence is without limit, restraint or qualification. His omniscience is unlimited. His omnipresence is without restriction. God is the altogether absolute One. Truth is revealed to us in God’s word. Jesus Christ says, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall (absolutely) set you free” – John 8:32. This awesome Almighty Creator of the Cosmos is the absolute sovereign Monarch, the absolute God.

Leviticus 18:5 You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.”

In Christ, Brian
