Romans 1:15-17 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

This passage of Scripture is packed with key words of the faith. To preach the gospel is the Greek word “euangelizō “, meaning the glad tidings [good news] of the coming kingdom of God, and of the salvation to be obtained in it through Christ, and of what relates to this salvation. Power is the Greek word “dynamis”, meaning force, miraculous power and inherent power; power residing in God by virtue of His nature. We get our English word “dynamite” from this word - dynamis.

Salvation is the Greek word “sōtēria”, meaning deliverance from sin, death and eternal damnation in Hell. In an ethical sense, that which concludes to the soul's safety or salvation through saving faith in Jesus Christ - of Messianic salvation; salvation as the present possession of all true Christians the moment they first believe, but includes future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.

Everyone “that believes” is the Greek word “pisteuō”, meaning the conviction and trust to which a man or woman is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul; to trust put one’s confidence in Jesus or God as able to redeem us, for obtaining forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Heaven: saving faith. Righteousness is the Greek word “dikaiosynē”, meaning the state of one who is as they ought to be, right in the eyes of God; integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling and acting - the condition acceptable to God and approved of God.

Finally, faith is the Greek word “pistis”, meaning the religious beliefs of Christians with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ with fidelity, faithfulness. Relating to God, it is the conviction that God exists and is the Creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ. Relating to Christ, it is a strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God.

By knowing and understanding the original language of the passenger, we gain a deeper meaning and a stronger faith in the truth that we’ve always known in our hearts. With these words and terms defined in complete context now, reread the Bible passage at the top with a deeper meaning.

In Christ, Brian
