Exodus 20:3 “You
shall have no other gods before me.”
I started another topical Bible Study on the subject of
the Ten Commandments of God. The Ten Commandments are the first laws that God
revealed to Moses in the Old Testament, so they occupy a special place in that
legal code from our Almighty Creator. The Ten Commandments are not mere
suggestions or guidelines, but the blessed everlasting laws of our sovereign
omnipotent Heavenly Father to us.
Romans 13:8-10 “Let
no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for
he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “do not commit
adultery,” “Do not murder,” Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever other
commandment there may be, summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as
yourself.” Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore, love is the
fulfillment of the law.”
This passage proves that these laws of God have a
significance for God’s people that transcends culture. The Ten Commandments are
a summary of the enduring moral law of God. God’s demand that we have no other
gods before Him stands at the head of the Ten Commandments. This law should not
be understood in the sense of rank, as if there are truly other gods and that God
is merely the highest. There are no rival deities to Yahweh, the Creator of
all. Yet, anything that we place a higher priority and importance than our
Heavenly Father is a god to us that we serve. The first commandment means no
other gods exist before the face of Lord God; before His omnipresent presence
and between His holy face and ours.
Deuteronomy 5:7 “You
shall have no other gods before me.”
The study points out that because the God of Holy Scripture
is the one and only true God, we are obligated to render worship unto Him
alone. No having and serving other gods. God disciplined the Israelites when
they served the Baals and the Ashteroth in Judges 2:11-15. The Old Testament
also looked forward to the day when the other nations would abandon their false
gods and worship the one and only true God; a day that comes to fulfillment in
Christ as people from all tribes and tongues worship Yahweh God through Christ.
Lord God Almighty alone is God and should receive our ultimate trust and
allegiance. God is for us. Only He cannot fail us. In God We Trust. The One and
Only.
Blessings
