Romans
5:15-21 “The free gift is
not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more
have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus
Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of
that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought
condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For
if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much
more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of
righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore,
as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of
righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For
as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the
one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law
came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded
all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might
reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our
Lord.”
I
read an article by Rev. Conrad Mbewe on a way to look at and think about the
above Bible passage in Romans on God’s grace, which I’d like to share with you
today.
God
gave us consciences to convict us when we sin against Him. Then what was the
need of the law? God gave us the law in order for us to be even more convicted
when we sin because now we sin against the light. Not only have we done
something wrong in committing a sin, but that “wrong” in which we commit is the
transgression and willful breaking of a law of God, our Maker and Heavenly
father. The law increases the trespass because in the light of “You shall
not´.´.´.´,” we say, “Who is the Lord that I should obey him?” Is He truly Lord
of my life?
This
ought to seal our doom because God is full of justice and His wrath against sin
is righteous. However, where sin
increased, grace abounded all the more. In other words, God’s grace is so inexhaustible
that however great our sin might be, He is able to pardon it completely in
Christ Jesus, who paid for that sin upon the Cross in our place. God has such a
super-abounding store of grace that for all born-again Believers. When all the
ransomed sinners through history have taken enough from it, there will be no noticeable
change in His storehouse of grace. His giving will have only begun. A thirsty
man would sooner worry that others, having gotten to Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya,
Tonga meaning "The Smoke that Thunders", is the largest waterfall in
southern Africa on the Zambezi River at
the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe) before him and drunk their fill, may have
exhausted its waters, than a sinner worry that God may run out of grace to meet
his need because others got there before him or because he himself has too many
sins.
No,
God’s grace towards His children is as infinite as His own person. God’s own
Son has paid an infinite price for our sins for our redemption. Therefore,
Fanny J. Crosby was right when she wrote, “The vilest offender who truly
believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.” Have you been a vile
offender and broken God’s law times without number? O, then, come to the Lord
Jesus Christ just as you are and plunge yourself under this rich waterfall of
God’s overwhelming and inexhaustible grace. God’s love has no limits, His grace
has no measure, His power no boundary known unto men; For out of His infinite
riches in Jesus He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again”.
Blessings
in the grace of God and eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
