Understanding the Infinite

Proverbs 19:21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.”

Infinitely is truly beyond understanding the magnitude of “endless”. Existing on this tiny blue planet in this vast universe, we barely grasp a piece of what we is revealed. Can the finite human brain comprehend the infinite? Can we imagine anything going on in each and every direct for eternity or in another dimension, outside of time and beyond our five senses? This is why “sin” is fundamentally irrational. We see sensually limited and materially restricted people oppose the comprehensive sovereignty of an infinite, all-knowing, ever-presence and almighty God over all things. I read that many individuals are found to be abhorrent to the idea that the Creator Lord has ordained whatsoever comes to pass and everything that takes place in history occurs according to God’s sovereign decree. In our falleness, we want to believe that we have the final say in events and what we do … what we want, whenever we want. We are in our own little irrational world.

Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

The article asks the obvious question: Knowing our own limitations, why would we want to believe that our will might actually have the final say? We do not know everything, just enough to be dangerous. With the temptations of the sinful weak-flesh desires, the prideful God-rejecting world system and the alluring demonic lies of Satan, we are often deceived, and sometimes the goals that we achieve end up bringing with them harmful consequences that we never anticipated. Given this reality, we should desire only for the will and way of a perfect Being to be accomplished in every circumstance. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Isaiah 14:24The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.”

Thus, divine sovereignty, when rightly understood and embraced, is both comforting and fundamentally rational. Understanding our frailties and finitude should motivate us to love the fact that only the purposes of One who is perfect in love, knowledge and power, should give us peace, rest and find confirmation that although we may make many and varied plans, these plans will only come to fruition if they reflect our Maker’s purpose. Our devices cannot in the least alter His counsel, nor disturb the proceedings of it; He accomplishes what He intends. Sometimes, this is not evident to us immediately, or we find His work perplexing because we cannot comprehend the ways that the Lord is working things out in our lives. Yet, this is not a reflection on divine wisdom or benevolence. Instead, it is a consequence of the distinction between Creator and created creatures.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Because we know that He is good and holy, we can find rest for our souls no matter what He does in our lives. We can trust that our Creator is working out our lives for our ultimate benefit and the kingdom of heaven, and in that we can put our faith. How big is our God? Infinite.

In Christ, Brian
