When Bad Things Happen – Part 2

John 15:18-21 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

Continuing Pastor Kyle message from yesterday’s list of 4 things we need to remember as bad things are happening. (3) God is with us in the hurt. Horizontal problems require trust in God for vertical answers. Both world and personal history proves that we are quick to question and blame God when bad things happen. We eventually surrender that, but it can be a wild ride getting there. We have to remember that God sees what we do not see. Everybody has been hurt in this life to some extent. We need to shift the pain off ourselves and onto the Savior that can change it to peace. (4) God is using the situation for good; even if we never get to see it … others do. The Lord seems to never minister to one, but His purposes are multi-purposed to work in the lives of more than we can imagine. His plans and hands branch far beyond our plans to touch the hearts and lives of those in need. When “bad” things start happening, we can start asking ourselves; “I wonder what ‘good’ things are going to start happening through the Lord?”

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

The next time that bad things start happening, (1) look up, rather than around. Always shine with the glory of God, choosing to look up and go to Jesus directly for the comfort we need, instead of people, places or things. Matthew 6:33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Seek first the kingdom of God, and make religion your business: say not that this is the way to starve; no, it is the way to be well provided for, even in this world.” You’ll see the glory of God more than your problems. We don’t need much from anybody else, when Christ is our comfort and we do not know the true power of our testimony in the midst of our struggles. (2) Surrender to the Lord immediately. Life is a process of trusting God. Put your hands up, let go and let God, because He is in complete control of the situation. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”, along the narrow road to the kingdom of heaven. Put your faith and trust in Jesus.

Job 42:2 “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.”

(3) Forgive everyone whether they ask for it or not. Unforgiveness is like pouring acid on ourselves and expecting others to burn. Forgiveness releases the rewinding and replaying of offenses and injustice against us, where we suffer while the offenders go about their merry way without a thought about them. It’s about freeing us from the cycle of pain and abuse in our mind. Let it go. Let it go. Ephesians 4:31-32 says, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” And Colossians 3:13 says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Forgiving is a godly thing with many benefits for us.

Question: Is there someone that you need to forgive today? Is there someone that you need to ask forgiveness from? God forgave us in Jesus Christ. We thank Him for the cross. And when bad things happen to God’s people, they look up.

Psalm 9:10 Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”

In Christ, Brian
