Entropy & Eternity

Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will grow old like a garment, and those who dwell in it will die in like manner; But My salvation will be forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished.”

I remember “back-in-the-day” in Elementary School, we used to watch these Science films in class produced by Bell Labs with Dr. Research (Dr. Frank Baxter), teaching us the love of Science; that general sense of knowledge and understanding of truth and facts by the mind founded on generally acknowledged truths, or on experiment and observation. In Junior High School, I took a Physical Science class taught by Mr. Booth that further enhanced this passion for comprehending and appreciating life on God’s green earth. It is so easy to exist daily without looking around and seeing the truly amazing world that we live in. But, we also see in this world, the Second Law of Thermodynamics constantly working and realize that everything is running down, cooling down, wearing out, growing old and perishing. There is no escape from the law of entropy. The earth beneath our feet is cooling down more and spinning slower, ever so slightly, year after year. Even the moon, which just happens to be there in the right place at the right distance way to exert the proper gravitational force on tides and the atmosphere to sustain life, is drifting away, ever so slightly further, year after year. And, of course, our Sun is using up its fuel and burning out, ever so slightly more also. Life has cycles and new replaces the old.

2 Corinthians 5:1-9 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.”

I read that, with the “fall of mankind” and sin entering the world came the current order of things. We go from order to chaos, from clean and to dirty and rotten, from new to old and from living to dead. Everything breaks down and stops eventually. Science explains entropy. Thankfully, this is not all there is. The life, in this world, is not “The End”. For we have a Savior who declares, “Behold, I make all things new” – Revelation 21:5. This means the reversal of entropy. Paul says that “the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” – Romans 8:21. In heaven, we’ll experience freedom from the Second Law of Thermodynamics; a new heaven and a new earth, with the Lord, without entropy, for eternity.

The attached video is one of those Dr. Baxter Science lessons that I was shown in Elementary School in the early 1990"s. Do not miss Dr. Baxter's final words ... "The closer we get to creation, the closer we get to ________________________. Watch and see.
In Christ, Brian
