Do Whatever He Tells You

John 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

During our second session of Day 2 of our Church Conference, Pastor Brian Holland offered a captivating message based upon the Lord’s mother’s words at the Cana wedding in Galilee, where Jesus turned the water into fine wine. The point is that we need to wrap our life around Christ’s words, not God wrap His words around our lives. It a real soul-searching examination that gets right to the root question: “What are we looking for in life?” Is the answer: a balanced life? No, the answer is: a trusting and obedient life. Have you heard the old church hymn: “Trust and Obey?”

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

The crux of the matter for Christians is that we need to build on the kingdom of God, not build on the churches, because God is not interested in our kingdoms. God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is king and this is the king’s domain. The church is like a plant that we put in the ground and watered, but we cannot make it grow. The growing is God’s work. As disciples, what we experience in our Christian walk is real to us. Our true duty is to, by faith, trust and obey – to do whatever He tells us.

Psalm 84:12 “Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.”

But, instead, do we tame the gospel message and the words of Jesus in order to tame God? Is a different gospel being given? A kinder and gentler Jesus, who is the life of the party, that doesn't match King of king's and Lord of lord's Jesus of the Bible ? Is Sin never mentioned or, maybe, half a gospel presented where Jesus is Savior, but not Lord? And saved from who and what?

Jesus said in Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” And in Matthew 28:20 Obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Are we experiencing the presence of the Lord in our ministry, worship and Christian walk? In our Worship services and Bible Studies in His presence, worshipping “worshipping” or God? No "golden calf" idols please. Have we lost sight that it is all about Lord Jesus? Who is on the throne of our life?

Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

John 8:31-32 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Are we amusing ourselves to death? It seems that nobody cares about the mundane, except Jesus. If it is uncommon to be faithful in the common and the mundane, then we need to be “uncommon disciple” of Jesus Christ. What am I doing in my life? Am I being faithful to trust and obey whatever He tells me in His word? He gave us the Great Commission to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20), so tell others and advance the kingdom of Heaven. In the end, the good and faithful servant of the Lord fulfills their life purpose and gets what they truly look for in life … glorification, and as Jesus said: "to share your master’s happiness!" - Matthew 25:23, so obey the Lord, your God; do whatever He tells you. Jesus loves you to death and truly means it when He says that "you are to die for". Will you live for Him?

Psalm 119:166-168I wait for your salvation, Lord, and I follow your commands. I obey your statutes, for I love them greatly. I obey your precepts and your statutes, for all my ways are known to you.”

In Christ, Brian

Amen!
We need to be revolving around Jesus. He needs to be our center and all we do must reflect Him.

Thanks for sharing Brian.

What is our center? Who and what does our life revolve around? Great soul-searching questions. I really got a lot out of these Speakers at the convention. Listening to preaching and teaching is has always caught my interest. It's like standing in a crowded plaza in a foreign country and suddenly hearing someone speaking my native language.
Thank you for the centering comment. How true!
